lyrics

Young cousin Johnny was the first to go
Left for the States just seventeen years old
Spent all his money with nothing to show
Cousin Johnny was first to go

I made up mind, it was time to go North
Sold all of my things for what they were worth
“I can’t just stay here walking back and forth”
It was time to head up North

Left Tegucigalpa on a Saturday night
Was in Guatemala before the sun’s light
“ don’t miss my home and it doesn’t feel right”
I left on a Saturday night

And I’m Pennsylvania bound
Outside Philadelphia my family is found
Traveled four thousand miles on American Ground
I’m Pennsylvania bound

In Nuevo Laredo we started to walk
There were 30 other people and we barely talked
And 3 dead bodies laid out on the rocks
In Laredo we started to walk

We walked for 3 days on the Rio Grand
My feet growing tired from walking the land
But I felt I was finally making my stand
3 days on the Rio Grand

Just into Texas we got in the van
Held up at gunpoint by a once trusted man
“Now we’re headed for Houston as fast as we can.”
In Texas we go in the van

3 days of driving across the U.S.
Hadn’t eaten in days and could use a good rest
“When I see my sister I’ll be feeling blessed.”
3 days across the U.S.

Pulled up to a house in the suburbs somewhere
Saw my sister face and her long curly hair
And I cried with a feeling of joy and despair
Finally, in the suburbs somewhere

Now I’m working off my debt and planning to save
I keep telling myself that I’ve got to be brave
“Gotta work like a slave and disappear like a wave.”
I’m here now and planning to save
